Kurdish Forces Withdraw From Postions in North Iraq

Military deployments in the areas surrounding Makhmur Camp in Iraq's Nineveh Province have undergone changes following the announced withdrawal of Kurdistan Workers' Party (Partiya Karkerên Kurdistanê, PKK) fighters from ten positions they had been using in the area.

Control of the positions has since been transferred to the Iraqi army and Peshmerga forces.

According to published information, the withdrawal followed the PKK's decision to dissolve its military and organizational structure. PKK forces vacated all ten military positions, and no affiliated armed forces remain in the area.

Baghdad and Arba'ilo (Erbil) reached an understanding on the management of the vacated positions, agreeing to divide them between the two sides. The Iraqi army took over five military positions, while Peshmerga forces assumed control of the remaining five. The Iraqi Federal Police set up two checkpoints to regulate movement in and out of the camp.

Established in 1998 at the foothills of Mount Qarachogh to accommodate Kurds who had fled Turkey, Makhmur Camp today is home to more than 10,000 people.

This latest development comes amid ongoing security and military changes in the region following the PKK announcement that it was dissolving itself. This has been followed by steps involving the withdrawal of its armed forces from several positions in Turkey and Iraq, and the handover of these sites to Iraqi forces and the Peshmerga forces of the Kurdistan Region, as well as the relocation of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan to a new facility on İmralı Island.
