Assyrians in Switzerland to Commemorate Genocide

Siebnen, Switzerland -- On Sunday, 14 June, a memorial service will be held at the Catholic church in Siebnen to mark the 111th anniversary of the Assyrian genocide. The organizing committee has issued an invitation via social media calling on everyone to "come to commemorate the victims of the Suryoye and other Christian peoples together, to honor their memory, and to take on our responsibility to pass on the truth about this dark chapter in history to future generations."

The program begins with Holy Mass, followed by a ceremony featuring speeches. Speakers include the Archbishop of Switzerland, Mor Dionysios Isa Gürbüz; retired Chorepiscopus Kerim Asmar, Yasar Rhawi, Martin Halef, Denho Tuma, and former Assyrian member of the Turkish Parliament, Tuma Çelik.

Similar ceremonies will take place this Sunday in the Netherlands at the St. Ephrem Monastery and at St. Kyriakos Church in Enschede. On both occasions, a Assyrian monument will be unveiled. On Monday, June 15, Assyrian Remembrance Day, a public commemoration ceremony will also take place at the local Volkspark in Enschede.

In Switzerland, there is one public Assyrian memorial, in Locarno, established by the local Assyrian community.
