New York Life Insurance Company to Honor Ottoman Era Assyrian Life Insurance Policies
Bookmark and Share

New York Life Insurance Company began selling life insurance policies in the Turkish Ottoman Empire in 1882. In connection with turmoil attendant on the outbreak of World War I, however, New York Life stopped selling policies in Europe and in the Turkish Ottoman Empire after 1914. Various reference works and other sources indicate that many persons of Assyrian heritage living in the Turkish Ottoman Empire at the outbreak of World War I were displaced or perished between 1915 and 1923. Certain life insurance policies issued by New York Life in the Turkish Ottoman Empire were issued to persons of Assyrian heritage and appear to have been in effect after 1914. New York Life's records show that it paid benefits on many of these policies. As to certain other policies, however, New York Life has no record of claims having been made, or of benefits or cash values having been paid, on these policies, referred to as the "Assyrian Policies." To encourage claims upon the Assyrian policies, New York Life has established the Assyrian Life Insurance Policy Program. Descendants of persons insured under the Assyrian Policies may submit claims for benefits by following the steps summarized below. If you can prove that you are a descendant of a person insured under one of the Assyrian Policies, you may be entitled to benefits under this program. Steps to Submit a Claim

  1. Review the list of persons insured under the Assyrian Policies.
  2. Determine whether you are related to anyone on the list.
  3. Complete the claim form (attached below) if you can prove that you are a descendant of a person insured under one of the Assyrian Policies.
  4. Submit the completed claim form, either by mail or e-mail, by May 1, 2016.
Once a claim is submitted, the Assyrian Claim Board will review each claim and determine whether the claim includes all information necessary to make a decision on the claim. Payment will be made on all approved claims after all claims have been reviewed.
