As the final countdown to Iran's parliamentary elections starts, opinion polls predict a high turnout, especially in Tehran, where more than five million are eligible to vote, Press TV reports. According to Tehran Governor Morteza Tamaddon, 547 candidates will contest for parliamentary seats in the capital's constituency, including four seats for religious minorities comprising Zoroastrians, Jews, Assyrians and Armenians. He added that more than 5,000 voting stations in Tehran will be controlled and run by half a million people including representatives of candidates. Tamaddon also stated that election is a critical force in shaping the Iranian society and gives the general public an opportunity to have their voice heard. "Those who claim that elections in Iran are not real must visit our cities and towns to see campaigns, opinion polls, and voting stations for themselves," he added. Tehran governor said low voter turnout figures produced by foreign media were false and resulted from inaccurate measurements. Tamaddon noted that based on accurate polls, turnout in the forthcoming parliamentary election will be higher than the previous ones because people know their participation is a necessity for the establishment of democracy. Meanwhile, Intelligence Minister Heydar Moslehi told reporters that a high election turnout would be a punch in the face for arrogant powers "which have Iran under their radars." "They will see how Iranian people will vote in high numbers to strengthen their country's position at the international level," he added. Iran's Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar stated that election campaigns will wrap up on Thursday. He said there has been no problem with election campaigns and advised candidates to maintain course until the end of campaigning time. Nationwide election for Iran's ninth parliament will be held across the country on Friday, March 2. Some 47 million Iranians are eligible to vote and the main contest is among principlist, reformist and independent candidates.
