Fairfield, Australia -- Fairfield Council has voted to apply new wording to a controversial Assyrian Levies plaque to quell ethnic tensions and vandalism following a protest at a meeting last week. Intrigue has surrounded the Assyrians Levies plaque in Fairfield Park which commemorates Lt-Gen Sir Stanley George Savige, an Australian soldier who protected Assyrian refugees during World War I, since it was unveiled in November 2009. A site inspection conducted after its unveiling found the plaque "generally" met with the council's approval. The plaque has since been splashed with paint and in March it was removed from its plinth. Assyrian Levies president Gaby Kiwarkis said he reported the disappearance to Fairfield police however Det-Insp Martin Hayston said Fairfield police had no record of this event. The Fairfield Advance has since obtained a photograph of the plaque which shows the words were different to what was approved in 2009. In December 2010 the council received a complaint from Adem Cetinae which stated the Turkish community would find references to Turkish Army and Turkish forces offensive. He also requested the removal of the word genocide as it was a "severe term to brush a nation with". Last week about 30 protesters gathered outside Fairfield Council chambers after a misguided group SMS was sent to members of the Assyrian community. "They (council) want to remove the Assyrian-Australian memorial in Fairfield," it said. "We must voice our opposition to such moves." As chants rung out through the chambers, the council voted in favour of installing a replacement with the new wording to be decided by the council. Mayor Nick Lalich told the council that he looked forward to there being a proper memorial to the great soldier, Lt-Gen Savige. "Let's hope that the next contribution with the correct wording will not offend anyone in the community," he said.
