(AINA) -- Attiya Gamri, an Assyrian politician in the Netherlands, was reelected for the third time on Monday April 18th, 2011. Previously she served two consecutive terms in the provincial parliament of Overijssel (8 years). She will represent the province of North Holland for the next 4 years. Ms. Gamri will sit in the committee of Social Affairs and Culture and will work for improving the youth care system in the Netherlands, which she has advocated for in the past 4 years.

About 10,000 Assyrians (also known as Chaldeans and Syriacs) live in North Holland.

In addition to working on domestic issues, Attiya Gamri has dedicated much time to improving the situation of Assyrians in their ancestral homelands, especially those in the Nineveh Plain in North Iraq. Every year she organizes visits and fact-finding missions to Iraq. Her reports to EU parliamentarians and NGO's have highlighted the plight of the endangered Assyrians in Iraq. Ms. Gamri supports the establishment of a self administered, autonomous province for the Assyrians in the Nineveh Plain, as well as an Assyrian police force in Iraq.

The most recent fact-finding mission to Iraq was in April, 2011.
