TEHRAN -- Representatives of religious minorities at the Iranian parliament condemned the terrorist attack on the Catholic cathedral in Baghdad, and demanded the Iranian government to do what it takes to cut some foreign states' continued support for the Al-Qaeda terrorist group. In a statement issued on Wednesday, Zoroastrians' deputy Esfandiar Ekhtiari, Jews' representative Siamak Maresedq, representatives of Christians Robert Biglarian and George Vartan, and Assyrians and Chaldeans' deputy at the Islamic Consultative Assembly (parliament) Unathan Bet Kolia condemned the attack on the Baghdad church. "We believe that the desecration, insult and attack on religious sites by any group is a criminal and inhuman act and an insult to all monotheists of the world," the Iranian MPs said in their statement. The Iranian lawmakers further called on different political and social circles, the Iranian Foreign Ministry in particular, to condemn and take appropriate measures to cut certain countries' support for the violent al-Qaeda group. Meantime, the Iranian Foreign Ministry in a statement issued earlier today deplored the hostage-taking incident at Baghdad's Sayidat al-Nejat Catholic Church in which more than 50 people were killed, and cautioned that the move aimed to influence the political process for the formation of the new Iraqi government. On Sunday, a group of armed men took more than 100 worshippers at the church hostage for nearly four hours, and killed at least 52 people and injured over 60 others. Iraq has been the scene of almost daily attacks over the past weeks, resulting in the death and injury of many civilians and security forces.
