Georgian Human Rights Official Meets Assyrian Representative

The Chairman of the Committee On Human Rights and Civil Integration, Giorgi Arsenishvili starts meetings with the representatives of various Diasporas, residing in Georgia. Today he met the Chairman of the Georgian Assyrians International Congress, David Adamov.

Resettlement of Assyrians in Georgia started in 1827 and obtained the mass character during the World War I. Although, as Adamov explained, relation between Georgian and Assyrian people originates from far past, approximately 3000 years ago. Historical motherland of Assyrians is the current territory of Iraq. Today, 3227 Assyrians reside in Georgia. They basically, settle Gardabani and village Kanda of Mtskheta Region.

David Adamov, while speaking with Giorgi Arsenishvili, underlined the problems, which are related to preservation of Assyrian language and development of their culture. As he said, it would be desirable to add the lessons of Assyrian language as an optional subject in schools, where Assyrian pupils study. As it was outlined at the meeting, there exists the specialist of Assyrian-Aramaic language in the village Kanda.

The Chairman of the Committee offered the guest to participate in photo exhibition, which will be held in the beginning of March with the initiative of the Committee On Human Rights and Civil Integration and with the support of the National Center On National Minorities.

The exhibition will reflect residual and working environment of every national minorities, residing in Georgia.
