12 Assyrian Women Celebrated
Bookmark and Share

Fairfield, Australia -- Nargis Sada can still picture her mother kneading dough and cooking bread in the family's home in Iraq.

She is one of 12 Assyrian women with a photo and story in the Stories from Assyrian Mothers exhibition at Fairfield Museum and Gallery.

Ms Sada said her contribution brings up bittersweet feelings because her mother died two years ago.

In a description next to the photo, Ms Sada said her mother was "full of love, faith and patience, always smiling".

Ms Sada was a primary school teacher in Iraq for 25 years before fleeing to Australia eight years ago.

The exhibition came out of creative writing and photographic workshops organised by Fairfield Council, Karitane and the Auburn Community Development Network.

Karitane co-ordinator for volunteer home visiting Kardonia Daawod said it was hard to tell some stories "not because you don't want to remember them, but because you want to survive".

"We tell stories about crossing borders and family members separated and living in different countries around the world."

Stories from Assyrian Mothers will be at Fairfield Museum and Gallery until October 15. Photos will be available at www.fairfieldcity.nsw.gov.au/mystories/assyrianmother.
