Chicago (AINA) -- On March 1, 2014 representatives of Assyrian (also known as Chaldean and Syriac) organizations in the U.S. convened in Chicago to discuss the decision of the Republic of Iraq's Cabinet to study the possibility of establishing three new provinces in Iraq (AINA 2014-01-22).

The attendees welcomed the news and expressed their appreciation to the Iraqi government for taking this important step to grant legal rights to various ethnic and religious groups, who are integral members of Iraq's ethno-religious mosaic.

The representatives agreed unanimously to establish a joint committee to coordinate the efforts of American Assyrians to help in the establishment of a province for Assyrians in Iraq.

A large number of Assyrians in the U.S. are from Iraq. They have emigrated from their ancestral lands because of persecution, forced displacement, war and genocide (report).

The representatives expressed gratitude to the government of Iraq, under the leadership of Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, for addressing this long-awaited concern of Assyrians.
