Assyrian Federation of Sweden Sending Aid to Assyrians in Syria

Sweden (AINA) -- The Assyrian Federation of Sweden has taken several steps to help Assyrians in war torn Syria. The Federation, which has been sending humanitarian aid to Assyrians in Syria for more than a year, recently launched a new aid campaign for Christmas together with its youth and women's federations. Through the campaign the Assyrian community in Sweden is encouraged to donate money to Assyrians suffering in Syria.

"We're trying to coordinate and increase the help to our brothers and sisters in Syria," said Afram Yakoub, president of the Assyrian Federation of Sweden. "We can't rely on the international aid agencies because most of the time their aid doesn't reach Assyrian communities."

The Assyrian Orthodox Church in Sweden as well as other Assyrian organizations have also reached out to Assyrians who made it to Sweden recently by giving them information and offering them memberships in the Assyrian organizations, enabling them to integrate into the large and vibrant Assyrian community more quickly.

There are nearly 100,000 Assyrians in Sweden.
