Ealing, England -- EResidents bowed their heads in a minutes silence this morning in memory of those who died in acts of genocide throughout the world. It followed a tree planting ceremony outside the council's Perceval House offices in Ealing Broadway to mark Holocaust Memorial Day. Today is the 67th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp in south-west Poland. Ealing's mayor John Gallagher and deputy mayor Mohammed Aslam planted the tree at 11am in remembrance of all the victims of the Nazi Holocaust and all other victims of persecution and torture, including those in Armenia, Assyria, Cambodia, Bosnia, Kosovo, Sri Lanka, Rwanda and Darfur. Council leader Julian Bell, said: "Ealing is a vibrant and diverse borough with strong community cohesion and we will not tolerate persecution. Holocaust Memorial Day helps to ensure that these terrible atrocities are never forgotten and gives us the chance to think about the part we can all play in standing up to discrimination."
