Assyrian Wins Seat in Turkish Parliament, Erdogan Reelected

(AINA) -- An Assyrian lawyer, Erol Dora, has become the first Christian in 50 years to win a seat in Turkey's parliament. Mr. Dora ran as an independent, representing the district of Mardin, which is the traditional homeland of Turkey's Assyrians (also called Chaldeans and Syriacs). Mr. Dora is a member of the Syriac Orthodox church.
According to unofficial results, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan won his reelection bid and his ruling party, the Justice and Development Party (AKP), won 50% of the vote. The Republican People's Party (CHP) won 26%. The Nationalist Action Party won 13%.
