BERLIN (AFP) -- The German presidency of the European Union condemned "in the strongest terms" the bombing in Beirut which killed 10 people including a Lebanese MP and his son earlier Wednesday.
"The presidency condemns in the strongest possible terms this attack (which is) a new attempt to destabilise Lebanon," the EU presidency said in a statement released through the German foreign ministry.
"This is unacceptable and will not succeed."
The car bomb killed prominent anti-Syrian MP Walid Ido, his eldest son and two bodyguards along with six other people in a seafront area of the Lebanese capital. A security official said 11 other people were wounded in the blast.
Ido was a member of the Future Movement of Saad Hariri, whose father and former premier Rafiq was assassinated in a similar blast more than two years ago, blamed on neighbouring Syria.
The EU presidency said those responsible for the latest blast must not go unpunished.
"The causes of this attack must be clarified and those responsible must be punished," it said.
It called on all factions in Lebanon "and in the region" to refrain from violence and "prevent further destabilisation in the internal political situation" in the country.
"The political crisis in the country can only find a solution through dialogue and by respecting democratic principles," it said.
Members of Lebanon's ruling coalition have blamed Damascus for a spate of deadly bomb and grenade attacks in and around Beirut.
Ido is the third member of Lebanon's parliamentary majority to be killed in a car bombing in the past two years. The last political murder in Lebanon was of industry minister Pierre Gemayel in November.
