Fairfield, Australia -- Fairfield Council is considering building a war memorial that will honour the collaborative efforts of the Assyrian and Australian defence forces.

The Wakeley-based Assyrian Levis Association has requested the memorial to recognise the joint operations of both national armies in World War I.

Spokesman Gaby Kiwarkis said he wanted the memorial to be built beside the International Fountain Monument near Fairfield railway station.

"Most Fairfield Assyrians are not aware of the Australian contribution to their very existence and other cultures are not aware of the Assyrian contribution to their freedom," he said in his submission to the council.

"This plaque I believe will be a point of unity, understanding and pride that will help settle new Assyrians into Australian society, and also (help) the Assyrian youth feel a sense of pride and gratitude for their adopted country."

Mr Kiwarkis said the memorial would recognise the assistance of the late Gen Stanley George Savige who rallied members of the Australian Imperial Forces to assist Assyrians serving in the Persian city of Urmia in 1918.

Defying his British commander, Gen Savige and members of the Dunsterforce fought alongside Assyrian troops for four weeks and later led them to safety.

Mr Kiwarkis said he hoped that in establishing a monument, he would encourage young Assyrians to be proud of Australia.

"I want the youths to be great Assyrian-Australians not just Australians."

The request was tabled by Cr Zaya Toma at last month's council meeting.
